original shellback certificate, earned for crossing
the equator aboard the SS Afoundria on his way to the
Pacific. I found it interesting and a
little scary to note on
another web site that the Afoundria was torpedoed in
the Caribbean less than a month after the date on this
certificate. |

This is Dad with two of his
shipmates. Dad is in the center, holding the weapon. |

This is Dad, carrying his
omnipresent .45 Thompson. We think it was taken on
Okinawa.
Years later, a friend of my father found a dewatted
Thompson and had it mounted on a cherrywood plaque and
presented it to him. |
