Bill O'Ferrall

I joined NMCB 11 in homeport after the Dong Ha Deployment. I was a Platoon Cdr. in Bravo Company and made the Quang Tri and the Camp Evans Deployment. When the Battalion was decommissioned in December of 1969, I received orders to the Navy Marine Corps Reserve Training Center at Fort Wayne, Indiana. I was a Chief of the Station and worked with several Surface Reserve units (my thoughts on that are better left unsaid). I was also Training Chief for a Reserve Seabee Detachment, those guys saved what little sanity I had remaining. They would do anything, except go into classrooms for lecture type training, so in order to satisfy the requirements we "Gun Decked" the reports and everyone was happy.

In August of 1972, realizing that our sons did  not need to continue changing schools every two to three years, and not wanting to go to Diego Garcia, I retired. I had applied for authorization to teach in the NJROTC program and accepted a position as Assistant Naval Science Instructor at Fabens High School in Fabens, Texas. I stayed at FHS for eight years and along with NJROTC I coached the golf team, taught History, Government and even helped to direct some school plays. The good news is I was able to teach both sons. In 1980 with two sons in Texas A & M University I realized that teacher pay wasn't making it, I could either eat or teach but not both.

I took a job in San Angelo, Texas as an estimator for an electrical contractor and things went great until the oil bust in 83. I then went to Angelo State University as the appliance repair electrician, and later moved to Utilities Manager. My 8 years teaching plus 11 years with ASU and 5 years purchased toward retirement for military time allowed me to retire in 1994 with 24 years.

Since retirement, Peggy, my wife of 46 years, and I have enjoyed RVing around the US of A. In the summer of 'o2 we RVed to Alaska. I stay busy playing golf, doing some fishing and going to Dallas to spoil our one and only grandson.
