Marcus Sparks
I joined the Seabees in 1960, going from boot
camp to U.S. Navscon at Port Hueneme. I attended CE-"A" school classifying as
CEW, and from there I went to Adak, Alaska, via Whidbey Island and Seattle going
to ships company "emergency" service for one year. I was finally assigned to a
MCB 11 at Midway. We wired the in-flight barracks with a fire alarm system that
was state of the ar "zoned" and all. After Midway we returned to Port Hueneme
and military training at Camp Pendleton and then on to Guam for the 1963
deployment. We returned to Port Hueneme for more training and schooling, where
we received the "new" M-14. Was in Okinawa for the 1963-64 deployment, leaving
there in July 1964 for Kadena airbase enroute to "Treasure Island" for the last
time, departing the Navy in August. And now 39 years later a semi-retired master
electrician self employed looking back and seeing that joining the United States
Navy was one of the best decisions that I have ever made, except of course
asking my wife of 35 years to be my wife.
