Harwell Ethelbert Halstead, 86, passed away May 1, 2007, in Virginia Beach General Hospital. Mr. Halstead was born Jan. 16, 1921, in Norfolk to the late Harwell and Thelma Halstead. Mr. Halstead was a retired senior chief petty officer with the U.S. Navy with service during World War II. He later returned to active duty in 1952 and served during the Korean and Vietnam wars and retired in 1970. He was a member of the Seabees and was a Mason in California where he previously lived. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Brothers Halstead and a grandson, Keath Eskew. Mr. Halstead leaves to cherish his memory four children, Dennis B. Halstead, Debbie Schultzel and her husband Kurt of Ojai, Calif., DeLene Hency and her husband Jerry of Oxnard, Calif., and Richard B. Halstead and his wife Florence of El Cerrito, Calif.; four grandchildren, Kendall Eskew, Michelle Sharp, Beverly Bashta and Kendralyn Halstead; four great-grandchildren; as well as his lifelong friend, Randolph Malbon. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel.
